BU School of Music People

The School of Music has an outstanding student/teacher ratio of about 8 to 1. The teaching body of 21 full-time and 13 part-time faculty members includes internationally renowned performers, conductors, composers and scholars. Links to faculty profiles are provided below. Feel free to contact any of our faculty members directly at any time.

Our student body is drawn from across Canada and around the world. In recent years, students from Ghana, Malawi, China, Japan, Mexico, Costa Rica, Paraguay, Hungary, South Africa, Ukraine, Russia, Mexico and the former Yugoslavia have enrolled in Brandon University’s famed School of Music. Many students attending the School of Music receive scholarships. Last year, music students received over $200,000 in scholarships, assistantships and bursaries.

Graduates of the School of Music are engaged in a wide variety of professions. Many perform with major orchestras and professional opera companies in Canada, the United States and Europe. Others are teachers, music therapists, composers, scholars, administrators, broadcasters and recording engineers.

The School of Music hosts many visiting professors for short- and long-term residencies. Jazz legend Bob Brookmeyer has been our Stanley Knowles Distinguished Visiting Professor.  His activities here have included performing, teaching private lessons, coaching ensembles, lecturing, conducting and guiding us in important ways as we continue to develop our jazz studies program. American composer George Crumb fulfilled a short-term residency here in October 2000 and Canadian pianist Marc-André Hamelin was in residence for a week in October 2004.
