Dr. Lynn Whidden's Essential Song:
Three Decades of Northern Cree Music nominated for Book of the Year award.
Congratulations to Dr. Lynn Whidden, a Professor in the Brandon University Northern Teachers Education Program (BUNTEP), whose recent book Essential Song: Three Decades of Northern Cree Music has been named as a finalist for ForeWord Magazine's Tenth Annual Book of the Year award, in the music category.

ForeWord features reviews of independently published books. Nearly 1,600 books were entered in 61 categories for the awards. These were narrowed to 658 finalists, from 350 publishers. The winners will be determined by a panel of librarians and booksellers, selected from ForeWord’s readership. Gold, Silver, and Bronze winners, as well as Editor's Choice Prizes for Fiction and Nonfiction, will be announced at a special program at BookExpo America at the Los Angeles Convention Center in Los Angeles on May 29, 2008.

The winners of the two Editor's Choice Prizes will be awarded $1,500 each. Essential Song also recently received a “Highly Recommended” designation from reviewer Bruno Nettl in Choice, a publication of the American Association of College and Research Libraries. For more information, please go to:

Alexandria Wilson Receives Ph.D. from Harvard
The same week that Bill Gates received his honorary doctor’s degree from Harvard University, Alexandria (Sandee) Wilson of Opaskwayak Cree Nation, The Pas, Manitoba, received her Ph.D. in Education from that most venerable of North American universities. David Westfall has shared a CBC radio clip that we feature in MP3 format at:

Professor Lynn Whidden's New Book
from Wilfred Laurier Press
Essential Song: Three Decades of Northern Cree Music: A Study of Subarctic Cree Hunting Songs, is the first detailed ethnomusicology of the northern Cree of Quebec and Manitoba. The result of more than two decades spent in the North learning from the Cree, Lynn Whidden’s account discusses the tradition of the hunting songs, their meanings and origins, and their importance to the hunt. She also examines women’s songs, and traces the impact of social change—including the introduction of hymns, Gospel tunes, and country music—on the song traditions of these communities.

Denis Rondeau and Roméo Lemieux
are directing and teaching the EXPLORE program for the third year

Generals Wolfe and Montcalm smile from the other side as they shake hands in mutual friendship and congratulations.  “Bravo!” they shout in glee as their separate cultures and languages blend and complement each other…

This is EXPLORE.  Students from all across Canada apply for bursaries through Heritage Canada to study their second official language and to explore the wealth of cultures that paint the Canadian landscape beyond their hometown.  For 5 exciting weeks these college and university youths immerse themselves in English only or French only language classes and cultural activities in programs developed in several universities across the land.

Here at BU, Denis Rondeau and Roméo Lemieux are directing and teaching the EXPLORE program that is now in its third year.  This year 31 language enthusiasts have come from Quebec to hone their “th” pronunciation and appreciate a myriad of other precisions that contribute to a greater proficiency in all aspects of English.  A year of planning ensures that all activities satisfy both linguistic and cultural objectives while entertaining our student guests.  Brandon University easily becomes a second home to these energetic learners because of the genuine care demonstrated by every level of service on campus, especially that by the Ancillary Services with whom they have daily contact.  Fond memories are created by our two excellent program assistants Denis Costa and Crystal DePauw who are both recent BU Education graduates.  These qualified teachers plan with the instructors to deliver language experiences that replicate real life situations to deepen the second language learning.

When our EXPLORE students return home, they take with them a personal understanding of the target language and of the people in this part of Canada that use it.  Could this country ask for better ambassadors?  We think not!
