Office of the Vice-President (Academic & Research) |
| The Vice-President (Academic & Research) works in conjunction with the President and Vice-President (Administration & Finance) to develop and promote academic programming and research advancement as mandated by the Brandon University Vision/Mission Statement. As such, offices and programs that directly sustain these aspects of the University's operation report to the Vice-President (Academic & Research). These include the Faculties of Arts, Science, and Education; Schools of Music and Health Studies; Graduate Studies; Campus Manitoba; Library Services; Information Technology Services; and the Centre for Learning Technology. |
| The Office of the Vice-President (Academic & Research) also provides funding and guidance for the Brandon University Teaching Enhancement Committee (BUTEC), and administrative support for the Brandon University Research Committee (BURC), the Brandon University Research Ethics Committee (BUREC), and the Brandon University Animal Care Committee (BUACC). |
| The Office of the Vice-President (Academic & Research) is also home to the Research Services Office which collects and disseminates information relating to research funding opportunities for faculty and other academic staff. The Coordinator of Research Services acts as the University's primary liaison with major federal granting agencies (SSHRC, NSERC, CIHR, etc.) and monitors funding initiatives and announcements from a variety of other governmental and nongovernmental sources, including CFI and the Canada Research Chairs Program. The Research Services Office acts as a resource for BUREC and BUACC and provides administrative support for BURC, which disperses numerous research awards each year through a peer-reviewed, competitive process. Research Services also maintains a database of faculty research interests and publications in an ongoing effort to maximize colleague and community awareness. |

| Dr. Simon Pattison | ||||
| As a Brandon University alumnus, Dr. Pattison appreciates the significance of a strong undergraduate education and how it provides for a solid foundation for a very successful future. After graduating from BU in 1985 with a 4-year B.Sc. (Specialist) degree in Geology (Physics minor), Dr. Pattison completed M.Sc. (1987) and Ph.D. (1991) degrees at McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario under the supervision of Dr. Roger Walker. His M.Sc. research focused on long, linear shoreface sandstone bodies in the Upper Cretaceous Cardium Formation of Alberta, while his Ph.D. unraveled the sedimentology and sequence stratigraphy of the marginal- to shallow-marine Lower Cretaceous Viking Formation of Alberta. | |||||
| Following the completion of his Ph.D., Dr. Pattison was hired as an Exploration Geologist by Imperial Oil Resources Ltd., Calgary (1991-1992), where he worked on Cretaceous sandstone plays in Alberta and the Mackenzie Delta. A year later, Dr. Pattison was recruited into a Shell International-sponsored Senior Research Fellowship, based at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland (1992-1994), and was granted an educational leave of absence from his position at Imperial Oil. During his two-year Senior Research Fellowship, Dr. Pattison travelled and worked in four different countries on three continents. The main focus of his research was to examine the sedimentary architecture and sequence stratigraphy of the Upper Cretaceous deltaic deposits in the Book Cliffs of Utah, and to apply these results to the optimization of hydrocarbon exploration and development activities within the Shell Group of operating companies.
