Bachelor of Nursing Program
 

The School of Health Studies at Brandon University offers a four year program leading to a Bachelor of Nursing (BN) degree.  This professional program will prepare graduates to work in a variety of settings with individuals, families and communities to promote, maintain and strengthen health. 

Graduates will be able to choose employment opportunities in hospital/community settings, educational institutions or administrative areas.  Opportunities for careers in nursing are numerous and diverse.  Professional nurses' associations in Canada are predicting a dramatic increase in the demand for nurses. 

Graduates of the BN program will be eligible to write the qualifying examinations for licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) with the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM).

1. What are my Career Opportunities?
 

The Bachelor of Nursing Program prepares graduates to work as Registered Nurses (RN) in a variety of settings.  Registered Nurses  may assume any one of the following roles:

  • Direct care provider to individuals and families with acute or long term illnesses in institutions or in the community
  • Educational institutions- working in the educational environment teaching nursing students theory and clinical based practice
  • Administrative areas- assuming responsibility for leading other members of the health care team and for coordinating services

The BN Program attracts men and women, of all ages, who are willing to make a career commitment.  RN's participate as members of the health care team to promote health and to prevent illness.

Professional nurses associations in Canada are predicting a dramatic increase in the demand for nurses. The starting salary for Registered Nurses in Manitoba is $59,531 per year.

3. What is the BN Curriculum?
 

The BN Program consists of 120 credit hours.

Students in the BN Program will be required to successfully complete the following courses:

4. How do I apply?
 

Upon successful completion of the required Pre Nursing courses, students can apply and will be considered for acceptance into the BN program.  The BN Program will accommodate the admission of 48 students per year. GPA (Grade Point Average) in the Pre Nursing courses will be the primary criterion for admission, if there are more applicants than space available.

 
Admission to Pre Nursing
 

Applicants who meet the general admission requirements of Brandon University will be accepted into the Pre Nursing Year.  The following high school courses are highly recommended:  English 40, Math 40S (Pre Calculus or Applied) and Biology 40S.

Admission information and forms are available from the Brandon University website, or by contacting the Admissions Office at (204) 727-9784.  Completed application forms and required documentation should be forwarded to the Admissions Office as early as possible.

 
 
 
 
5. Is the BN Program available through distance education?
 

Some of the Pre Nursing courses are available through Distance Education.  Year 2, 3 and 4 courses are offered on campus.

6. Can I transfer credits into the program?
 

1.  Students who have obtained courses at another accredited university will be eligible to have these courses evaluated for transfer into the BN program.

2.  Students who have completed other relevant education will have these courses evaluated for transfer credit on an individual basis (LPN's, RPN's).  Please check with the BN Student Advisor for more information regarding transfer credit.

3.  Students with knowledge and skills attained outside the usual academic setting may apply to have their experience assessed by the PLAR (Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition) Advisor.  Elaine Tyler can be reached at (204) 571-8533 for more information.

 
 
7. What are the grade reuirements of the program?
 

Students may select full or part-time study in the BN program.

Students must achieve a "C" (2.0) grade or better in all courses.  An overall grade point average of 2.5 in the degree line, is required for graduation.

 
 
8. What are the clinical expectations?
 

Clinical experience is an essential part of the BN program.  The student will develop a broad range of competencies that will enable him/her to practice in a variety of clinical settings.

Criminal Record and Child Abuse Registry Checks are required prior to admission to the BN program.  For more information, please contact the Student Advisor at (204) 571-8567.

Clinical placements may be set up in Brandon, the surrounding area, or in other locations within the province.  Students are responsible for all expenses incurred (ie transportation, accommodation).  Students are expected to comply with the policies of any agency selected for clinical experience which may include Criminal Record and Child Abuse Registry Checks, Privacy of Information Act, Pledge of Confidentiality signing, immunizations and dress codes.

It is a fundamental expectation that students provide safe, ethical care to clients.  The School of Health Studies may require any student to withdraw from a clinical course or the program, based on consideration of competence, professional conduct or health.

10. What are the program expenses?
 

Tuition for an academic year (30 credit hours) is approximately $3660.00.  Textbooks will cost approximately $1300.00 per year. 

Uniforms, shoes, immunizations, CPR certification and travel/accommodation related to distant clinical experiences will be extra.

Students will be required to attend classes and clinical for five weeks in May-June following completion of Year II courses.  Upon completion of Year III courses, students will be required to attend a clinical course for three weeks in May-June.  This is part of the required curriculum.

Academic advice is provided by the BN Student Advisor.  All students are encouraged to consult with the Student Advisor prior to designing their program and on an annual basis thereafter. 

Course registration forms must be signed by the Student Advisor.

4 Betty Mitchell Memorial Scholarship in Palliative Care Nursing $625.00 To be awarded upon the recommendation of the School of Health Studies: a) the student must have shown exceptional ability to care for the body, mind and spirit of dying persons and their families during a clinical practicum course; b) preference will be given to a self-directed graduating student who has demonstrated initiative, understanding and a deep level of commitment to the goals of palliative care.
4 Rotary Club of Brandon Award $500.00 To be awarded, on the recommendation of the School of Health Studies, to a graduating student who has demonstrated exemplary personal and civic involvement, leadership, initiative and helpfulness in the program, department, university and the wider community.
