Interning and Field Experience

BUHEP students, in community schools, are expected to integrate student teaching with work in the school. As students progress, they are expected to assume greater responsibilities for planning and teaching. BUHEP students begin by tutoring individual students and teaching small groups, and then progress to teaching entire classes. They are expected to plan, implement and evaluate all current curricula: language arts, mathematics, science and social studies. BUHEP students must demonstrate independence in their teaching abilities by the end of their final year through teaching all curricular areas for an extended period of time.

The same expectation applies to the formal student teaching. Of the four sessions of the required student teaching, the first takes place in the home communitiy; the second takes place on another colony; and the last two take place in non-colony schools.

Evaluation of Interning and Field Experience

BUHEP supervisors observe and evaluate each BUHEP student intern two or more times each year. During the four formal field experience sessions, the personnel employed by the Brandon University Field Experience Office conduct the supervision weekly. Expectations for these visits are outlined in the Field Experience Handbook published by the Brandon University Field Experience Office. BUHEP students are expected to seek and receive assistance and feedback from their cooperating teachers, principal, and supervisors on a regular basis as they develop their teaching skills.
